European Stocks Drop, Paced by Hypo Real Estate, Depfa, Total, BP

(Bloomberg) -- European stocks fell, led by energy
companies and banks, after Citigroup Inc. lowered its
recommendation for the oil industry and Union Investment, a
German mutual fund manager, halted redemptions from a fund.

The Dow Jones Europe Stoxx Oil & Gas Index dropped to the
lowest in two months, led by Total SA and BP Plc. Hypo Real
Estate Holding AG, the mortgage bank spun off from HVB Group, and
Depfa Bank Plc also declined.

Murdoch looks to legacy with Dow Jones bid

(Reuters) - Now the 76-year-old media mogul aims to redeem his legacy in the business he loves most with the anticipated $5 billion purchase of Dow Jones & Co. Inc., owner of The Wall Street Journal, Barron's financial weekly and Dow Jones Newswires.




Dow Jones looked set to agree on Tuesday to the buyout later on Tuesday, regarded as one of the most audacious yet for the consummate dealmaker.

US STOCKS-Indexes end down for day;S&P worst month since '04

(Reuters) - All three indexes also ended the month of July lower, with
the S&P 500 booking its worst monthly percentage decline since
July 2004. For the month, the Dow was down 1.5 percent, the
S&P was down 3.2 percent and the Nasdaq was down 2.2 percent.




The Dow Jones industrial average was down 146.32
points, or 1.10 percent, to end unofficially at 13,211.99. The
Standard & Poor's 500 Index was down 18.64 points, or
1.26 percent, to finish unofficially at 1,455.27. The Nasdaq
Composite Index was down 37.01 points, or 1.43
percent, to close unofficially at 2,546.27.

US STOCKS-Indexes add to gains on consumer confidence

(Reuters) - The Dow Jones industrial average was up 126.89
points, or 0.95 percent, at 13,485.20. The Standard & Poor's
500 Index was up 12.93 points, or 0.88 percent, at
1,486.84. The Nasdaq Composite Index was up 21.79
points, or 0.84 percent, at 2,605.07.

Agfa, Alcatel-Lucent, Bulgari, Danone, Iliad, MAN: European Equity Preview

(Bloomberg) -- The following stocks may rise or fall
in European markets. Prices are from the last close.

The Dow Jones Stoxx 600 fell 0.2 percent to 372.03. The Dow
Jones Stoxx 50 Index declined 0.3 percent to 3710.74. The Euro
Stoxx 50 Index, a benchmark for the 13 nations using the euro,
dropped 0.1 percent to 4239.18.

(Reuters) - * Adobe Systems Inc. faces a wave of criticism
from printing companies for a deal that gives FedEx Corp.'s
Kinko's copy stores a link on some Adobe software. The
flap could hurt Adobe's standing with smaller print-shop
customers.




* Dow Jones & Co. Inc.'s controlling shareholders,
the Bancroft family, were still deliberating late Sunday
whether to sell to News Corp. , which has offered $5
billion for the publisher.

European Stocks Rebound; Imperial Chemicals, Linde Shares Advance

(Bloomberg) -- European stocks rebounded. Imperial
Chemical Industries Plc and Linde AG, the world's largest maker
of industrial gases, paced the advance.

The Dow Jones Stoxx 600 was little changed at 372.59 at 2:49
p.m. in London after falling as much as 0.6 percent earlier. The
Stoxx 50 decreased 0.1 percent, while the Euro Stoxx 50, a
measure for the 13 nations sharing the euro, was little changed.

Dow Jones family owners face deadline on bid: source

(Reuters) - Rupert Murdoch's News Corp., owner of Fox News, the New York Post and a sprawling global media empire, made its $60 a share bid for Dow Jones, the publisher of the Wall Street Journal, on May 1.




The board of Dow Jones endorsed the offer two weeks ago, sending the deal to the Bancroft family for approval.

Bancroft branch to vote against Murdoch bid: WSJ

(Reuters) - The Denver branch of the family, which holds 9.1 percent of Dow Jones's voting stock, supports the deal but wants News Corp. chief Rupert Murdoch to raise his $60 per share bid for the company, the Journal reported citing a person close to the company.




News Corp. has no intention of raising its bid, the Journal reported.

TREASURIES-Yields fall as US stock index futures dip

(Reuters) - S&P 500 futures were off 6.40 points, below fair
value while the Dow Jones industrial average futures were
down 54 points.




"Looks like jitters on subprime, and equities are falling.
But this is a vulnerable time of day an hour or two before the
Wall Street equity opening, and so volumes get thin at this
time," said a trader in London.

European Stocks Erase Gains; Hypo Real Estate, Nestle Lead Decline

(Bloomberg) -- European stocks erased an earlier
advance as shares of Hypo Real Estate Holding AG and Nestle SA
declined.

Europe's Dow Jones Stoxx 600 Index fell less than 0.1
percent to 392.53 at 11:24 a.m. in London. The Stoxx 50 added
less than 0.1 percent, while the Euro Stoxx 50, a measure for the
euro region, lost 0.1 percent.

European Stocks Erase Earlier Gains; Credit Suisse, Nestle Shares Drop

(Bloomberg) -- European stocks pared earlier gains,
paced by Credit Suisse Group and Nestle SA.

Europe's Dow Jones Stoxx 600 Index fell 0.1 percent to
392.18 at 8:51 a.m. in London. The Stoxx 50 slid 0.1 percent,
while the Euro Stoxx 50, a measure for the euro region, declined
0.2 percent.

US STOCKS-Earnings misses dent indexes; Dow, S&P off 1 pct

(Reuters) - The Dow Jones industrial average was down 128.52
points, or 0.92 percent, at 13,871.89. It slipped as low as
13,856.12. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was down
12.21 points, or 0.79 percent, at 1,540.87. The Nasdaq
Composite Index was down 27.09 points, or 1.00 percent,
at 2,692.95.

Dollar under pressure, Asian shares struggle

(Reuters) - Crude oil nudged higher, shrugging off gasoline's more than 4 percent slump a day ago, and gold rebounded with dealers expecting a weaker U.S. currency to spur buying.




Optimism about earnings at multinational companies pushed the Dow Jones industrial average to nearly 14,000 but the broader U.S. market fell on Monday, hit by fresh worries about troubles in the subprime mortgage sector .

Dow Jones board member moves to block News Corp: WSJ

(Reuters) - News Corp., owner of Fox News, the New York Post and a sprawling media empire, has offered $5 billion, or $60 a share, for Dow Jones, the publisher of the Wall Street Journal.




Bancroft is trying to buy more "supervoting" shares from other Bancroft heirs who may be ready to sell their stakes but share his distaste for handing the family legacy to Murdoch, the Journal said.

S&P hits record as GE, data boost stocks

(Reuters) -The S&P 500 index climbed to a record on Friday, surpassing levels reached during the Internet bubble, as General Electric Co. increased a stock-buyback plan and data showed improving consumer sentiment.

The Dow Jones industrial average was up 45.52 points, or 0.33 percent, to end unofficially at 13,907.25. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was up 4.80 points, or 0.31 percent, to finish unofficially at 1,552.50. The Nasdaq Composite Index was up 5.27 points, or 0.20 percent, to close unofficially at 2,707.00.

Robust earnings to keep stocks charged

(Reuters) - Rising energy and food prices coupled with uneven retail sales are not likely to slow down investors as they test the market's limits. At the same time, the financial sector is expected to avoid major losses from the subprime sector.




After a week where the Dow Jones industrial average and Standard & Poor's 500 index reached record highs on mergers and acquisitions activity and multibillion-dollar blue-chip buyback plans, investors will eye profits, inflation data and the Federal Reserve for signs of further good news.

US shares set to open little changed, GE in focus

(Reuters) - U.S. stocks surged on Thursday, with the Dow hitting a
record on its biggest point gain since 2002 after healthy sales
from retailers reassured investors about consumer spending and
miner Rio Tinto's bid for Alcan raised the
prospect of more consolidation.




On Thursday, the S&P 500 gained 1.9 percent, the Dow Jones
put on 2.1 percent and the Nasdaq rose 1.9 percent.

TREASURIES-Bonds slip as stock rally draws investors

(Reuters) - NEW YORK, July 12 - U.S. government bond prices
slipped on Thursday as a sizzling stock market rally convinced
investors to buy stocks instead of bonds.




Bond losses were modest, however, in the context of such
spectacular stock gains. As the Dow Jones industrial average
scored its first gain of more than 200 points in a year and its
biggest point climb since 2002, the benchmark 10-year Treasury
note gave up about a third of a point.
