Sallie Mae net up as derivatives value increases

(Reuters) - NEW YORK, July 17 - Student loan company Sallie Mae, whose proposed buyers are now threatening to call off their purchase, said on Tuesday that second-quarter earnings rose 33 percent, helped by increases in the value of some of its derivatives.



Sallie Mae, known legally as SLM Corp. , said net income rose to $966 million from $724 million a year earlier.

Sallie deal at risk as buyers question conditions

(Reuters) - The Sallie Mae buyers blamed proposals to cut government subsidies to student lenders, but analysts said the group may want an excuse to pull out or to negotiate a lower price given recent difficulties in raising financing in the debt market.




In another sign that buyers may be holding back, General Electric Co. and Abbott Laboratories Inc. said on Wednesday they terminated a proposed $8 billion deal for the sale of two Abbott diagnostics units to GE, saying they were unable to agree on terms.

Senate panel sets hearing on student loans

(Reuters) - The planned sale of Sallie Mae, the nation's largest student loan group, will also be explored at the hearing, the Connecticut Democrat said in a statement, adding that witnesses would be named later.
