Bernanke Stumbles as Lawmakers Bash Fed for Inaction on Consumer Lending

(Bloomberg) -- Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S.
Bernanke is a hero on Wall Street; the same isn't true in
Washington.

Sixteen months after succeeding Alan Greenspan, the
chairman has managed to avert recession despite a housing
collapse and keep inflation drifting lower in the face of $70
oil. At the same time, his relations with Congress are souring
as lawmakers threaten to strip some of the Fed's authority to
punish it for what they see as lax credit regulation.

U.S. Treasury Notes May Decline; Deutsche, Lehman Drop Calls for Rate Cut

(Bloomberg) -- U.S. 10-year notes may fall after
signs of growth in the economy made Deutsche Bank AG and Lehman
Brothers Holdings Inc. drop forecasts for the Federal Reserve to
cut interest rates this year.

The firms announced their changes at the end of last week,
following an increase in 10-year yields to their highest in five
years. Yields, which move in the opposite direction as prices,
climbed as former Fed Chairman Alan Greenspan predicted they may
rise further.

China shares hit new all-time high

(Reuters) - Gainers overwhelmed losers by 767 to 102. Turnover in Shanghai A shares was very heavy at 137.5 billion yuan , up from Friday morning's 107.0 billion yuan.




Traders said there was no fresh, major positive news behind the rally, but individual investors were encouraged by the market's strength last week in the face of an interest rate hike and former U.S. Federal Reserve chairman Alan Greenspan's warning that stocks were dangerously overvalued.
