(Bloomberg) -- New Century Financial Corp. said the
U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has stepped up its probe
of the subprime mortgage lender, the largest to file bankruptcy.
The commission told the Irvine, California-based lender's
lawyers on June 21 that a preliminary probe started in March will
become a formal investigation, New Century said in a regulatory
filing yesterday.
